Dry air, low precipitations, little soil
moisture and fluctuating temperatures are characteristics of winter in many areas of Colorado. Often there is little to no snow cover to provide soil moisture from October through March. Trees, lawn, shrubs and perennials can become damaged under these conditions if they don’t receive supplemental water.
How much love do I show them?
Winter watering should be done 1-2 times per month from late fall into early spring and should be conducted on warm days when temperatures are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the soil is thawed.

Meet Sam and Matt
Sam and Matt are our professional landscape design team that offers creative and cutting-edge ideas for homeowners and commercial properties. Our design team has been featured on Channel 9 garden episodes, Stroll Magazine, and Colorado Green Magazine. In 2023, Hughes Design won an award in the Design and Build category from the ALCC.
Sam Hughes is a Colorado Native and grew up locally in Parker. He went to CSU – Fort Collins and earned a horticultural degree. He is married to his amazing wife, Katie. Sam and Katie have 2 Weiner dogs, Winnie and Walter. Sam has worked at Hughes Landscaping for 15 years and has been doing professional designs for 3 years.
Matt Akabane grew up in California where he had a family owned nursery. In 2022, he moved to Colorado with his wife Kristi and their 4 children. Soon after moving to Colorado, Matt joined Hughes Landscaping. Matt carries a C-27 landscape license from California. He attended California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo and has been doing professional designs for 27 years.
